New Smartphone? How To Rock It Like A Boss, Part One – Step Into Tomorrow.
You were a kid during the 1960s and 70s if you have fond memories of “how things used to be”: writing on paper, reading a clock with ‘hands’, dialing zero on a rotary telephone and talking to an operator, putting a needle on a record. Now, you have crossed the bridge between the Industrial Age and the Information Age – dragged kicking and screaming into the era of all things “digital”.
Desktop computing was once the big driver of this shift. My techie addiction began with PCs and Macs (although way back-in-the-day there was a fair amount of my time and allowance spent at Radio Shack). Now, smartphones, tablets and the apps that run on these devices have become my mainline to productivity heaven!
Every now and then you run across the person who wants to “keep things simple” and only uses a phone to talk or to take a photo – anything else requires a call to tech support. Email, Web surfing? Nope! Banking, shopping? Weirdness! Socializing on Facebook? Pure evil!! Need movie times? Buy a newspaper! Listening to music? Turn on the radio!
Put away your reservations about ‘connecting’! Crack open the door of your log cabin and get comfortable living in the Digital Age!
Opening Pandora’s Box
Smartphones are the quickest and easiest way for trouble to find YOU unless you get a grasp on exactly what comes with being ‘connected’. Every gadget that gives us access to the World Wide Web also exposes us to the risk that some part of our life is out there for the “world” to see. Switch on your phone and “Big Brother” or “Big Data” knows every move you make. The trade-off for this ‘monitored’ way of life is the convenience of being able to get online at any time from anywhere and have information at your fingertips. Knowledge is power, but it can also be a powerful narcotic!
So, abandon your determination to “stay off the grid”! Follow the links here and learn how to have as much privacy as is possible these days.
Once you have gotten a firm grasp on just how wide you are about to open the window into your personal life, it’s time to decide which device is right for you. Most of the information in this blog also applies to tablet users as well.
